Entrance black-hole effect and transitions
Application Solution
Tunnel and Underpass LED Lighting Solution
LED lighting for road tunnels, industrial tunnels and underpasses, covering entrance, transition and interior zones, glare, dimming, emergency and maintenance.
Tunnel lighting manages driver adaptation from bright to dark and back. Entrance, transition, interior and exit zones should not use one identical output.
Design also considers speed, exterior luminance, pavement reflection, layout, emergency lighting, cleaning cycles and traffic closures.
Key project challenges
Glare or visual flicker from repetitive layouts
Dust reduces optical output and reflectance
Traffic closures make maintenance costly
Recommended workflow
- 1
Collect length, speed, portal orientation and pavement data
- 2
Define entrance, transition, interior and exit zones
- 3
Check optics, layout, dimming and emergency circuits
- 4
Plan cleaning, testing and staged maintenance

Frequently asked questions
Why use zoned tunnel dimming?
Exterior brightness and traffic vary, so zoning maintains adaptation and avoids unnecessary energy use.
Does every underpass follow road-tunnel design?
Requirements depend on vehicles, pedestrians, length, speed and applicable standards; short underpasses may differ.
